Because of the materials involved, condensing boilers become expensive at large capacities. The economical answer is to run several wall-hung units in parallel rather than installing one large appliance. In this arrangement — the cascade system — the units are required to be proportionally controlled, or modulating.
How It Works
In a cascade system every boiler runs in modulation. All boilers must be connected to the automatic control unit so that each can receive commands. When a change in the target room temperature is detected, boiler number one starts first and runs at 100% capacity.
The panel monitors the time needed to reach the target temperature entered in the service section, compares it against the target duration also defined there, and calculates whether the current boiler capacity can reach the required temperature within that window. If it decides the capacity is insufficient, it brings the next boiler online at minimum capacity and continues until the heat demand is met.
Uninterrupted Heat
Thanks to the cascade layout, in the event of any fault the heat is automatically supplied by the next boiler in the series and there is no interruption to the system.
A Low-Loss Header Is Essential
Every installation running on a cascade system requires a low-loss header. The wall-hung condensing boilers connected in series feed the same heating circuit, and total system capacity equals the sum of the individual boiler capacities.
